“You can’t be both beautiful and tired,” former model Barbara Feldon confided. “My close-ups at the end of the day in comparison with those taken earlier art astonishing.

Barbara tried to convince the director of her NBC-TV series, Get Smart, to shoot the close-ups earlier in the day but the gut nowhere. “The only other thing for me to do was find a way to last the day out without exhaustion,” she stated, picking up her needlepoint from the couch in her dressing room. “I have never been clever with my hands, but I find making this pillow top enormously relaxing. I am remote from the pressure of the set as I concentrate on what color to use next to complete my design. If you don’t participate mentally in the tension around you, it doesn’t exist for you.” Barbara has another relaxing routine both she and her husband alike.

“We find we have very restful sleep when we take a foot massage in our electrical foot bath. It’s a tub with the motor on the outside. We add bath salts to very hot water and sit there with our feet in the water and listen to music. “After about 20 minutes we massage our feet with rubbing alcohol, which we keep in the refrigerator. The contrast of hot and cold brings an added boost to the circulation.

After one of these treatments we feel relaxed all over. “We bought the machine in New York. It costs less than $15 and would make an excellent Christmas present for a tired executive or a fatigued mother.”

Stefanie Powers – Take three

“I’ve gone down for 122 to 112,” Stefanie announced proudly. “The weight I lost was not fat, so it was more resistant.

I intend to keep it this way because I feel well and look so much better in my clothes.” Stefanie had a great deal of thought to her weight losing project, “I went the slow but sure way. Mom people are eager to reduce quickly and they often gain back what they have taken off, “It was not how much I ate that got me Into trouble, but rather it was what I ate – in my mind, I very well knew I could have more calories of nourishing foods and not gain. But the minute snacked on foolish things, even though the calorie count was not high, my weight went up.

Here, on the set, when I choose from the snack cart I am eating sesame and honey bars, nuts and drinking fruit or vegetable juice. When I had healthful snacks, I noticed I was not gaining weight at all!” Stefanie continued: “My diet suited my taste, and I made a festive thing of each meal so that I enjoyed it. If I was at home I used pretty china, lighted candle in the evening and listened to music.

“Most of us eat too fast, and I find my appetite is sated more easily if you savor every bite. It helps if the meal is handsomely styled! Breakfast: A whole orange or half grapefruit, a rup of tea. a slice of lightly buttered whole-grain bread. Mid morning-A glaxi of vegetable )uir mixed with 2 teaspoonfuls of gelatin Lunch: Two lamb chops, or steak, a green vegetable and fresh fruit. “Sometimes I had a huge salad in the evening Instead of steak or chops. I like tossed romaine, tomatoes, radishes, cucumber, a pinch of dried tarragon and French dressing And a glass of skim milk, coffee or tea.”

Caterina Valente

“The Italians have considered olive oil an elixir for health for centuries, and my family Is no exception,” Caterina Valente revealed.

“When It Is pure, olive oil is packed with vitamins. When I feel run down or overly tired, I take a tablespoonful before my breakfast or before going to bed, and it gives a wonderful lift. “So many women are afraid of fats because they think of them as high in calories. And then they wonder why they have a dry complexion. We must feed our skin from within.” Miss Valente is a dedicated wife and mother, but she feels she can handle a career, too, because she has learned to organize her time.

“You have to be disciplined to accomplish your goals. The one thing I do Is weed out the time wasters in my life, and those are people who drift and egotistically waste one’s time. I have friends, but they understand when I am too busy to see them. “Women who say they don’t have time for exercising or planning a wardrobe Would be surprised how many minutes they could accumulate if eliminated wasted time.” Caterina was rehearsing a Hollywood Palace show, and I noticed a bottle of Italian olive oil on her dressing table. “I use it for my cuticles and eyebrows. Sometimes after I wash my face I spread a thin film of olive oil on my skin to soften it.”

Susan Hart – Take two

Sometimes we have to lose something to realize its full value. Susan Hart discovered this truth after she became bald about five years ago as the result of medication given to clear an infection. ‘Fortunately my hair grew back long and healthy, and I take very good care of it,” Susan said. “I wash my hair every day on the advice of a specialist.

The scalp needs to be Just as clean as the rest of the skin. “Every night before I go to bed. no matter how late it is, I shampoo my hair in the shower. When I wrap my hair around large soft rollers and cover my head with a waterproof cap.

Damp hair does not bother me a bit and I sleep like a baby. Others may have to shampoo earlier or in the morning. “Another rule for beautiful hair is to alternate shampoos. We seem to build an immunity to one if used too long. I found my hair didn’t look as well after I had been going steady with one shampoo, so now change every five “admired the high gloss and gleaming shine to her hair when I visited her on the “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine” set.

She says her final rule is to choose a brush with strong natural bristles and use it faithfully. “I brush at least five minutes every day, and it is important to bend down and forward while you brush. This position helps the blood to nourish the roots of your hair, and also makes it less tiring on the arms.”

Polly Bergen – Take five

This is a 1965 Lydia Lane article. Enjoy!

“Every woman has beauty potential,” Polly Bergen contends, “It’s just a matter of getting to work to develop It. Great contribution can be made with beautiful hair and kin. Mom women try to wear their hair in an unflattering way – they make the mistake of conforming to what is the latest fashion rather than wearing what will make them more attractive. “I have worn my hair in essentially the same way for more than 10 years. It is’ naturally curly, which could be a problem, but I have solved it with the right hair cut.

Because of the way I wear my hair I never have to bother to have it set professionally. I do it myself. “Once I control the unwanted curl. I brush it into place. Hair spray and clips hold it flat to my head. It dries straight and then I comb it into parts. “I am very much a do it yourself girl, but I would not consider cutting my own hair. A good barber can build a foundation to your hair style the way a good designer gives foundation to a dress.” Polly thinks the reason so many women have learned to do their own hair is because many of the beauty operators, especially the men think more about styling the hair than making it flattering to the customer. “I like clean hair and use a liquid cleaner called a ‘dry shampoo’ en regular shampoos. It doesn’t disturb the set. but it does an excellent job of removing dust and dirt. “After years of searching I’ve finally found a setting lotion that gives my hair the body it needs.

I always objected to using beer, and with this i don’t have to.” We were lunching in the pa- tin of Polly’i beautiful Beverly Hills home while listening (at my request) to her new album, a recording of her night club ad. When Polly moved out of the sun, she explained that she has a very dry skin. “Don’t laugh I use a formula which contains turtle oil. With Its use, I never have that taut, dry feeling that is so uncomfortable. And I find my make up goes on more easily.”

Kathie Browne – Take two

This is a 1965 Lydia Lane article. Enjoy!

“I want to talk about teeth,” Kathie Browne said when I visited her on Slattery’s People set. “Not enough emphasis is put on care of the teeth. Proper brushing is more essential to healthy teeth than anything else. The choice of dentifrice is secondary.

“My dentist recommends an electric tooth brush with hustles which go up and down, not sideways. He says it is impossible for a human as to replicate this mechanical skill or to spend the time to do such a thorough jolt “I brush conscientiously after every meal, I carry some powder and a small brush with me and remove all food particles that cling after eating.

Kathie has been wearing a band on her teeth except when she was working before the cameras, “i wore it for several years to correct my bite. If I hadn’t my teeth would have been crowded out of place. My digestion would have been affected, and eventually I would have lost the teeth I was not using. I wanted to mention this as a word of warning to others who might have a similar problem.” Kathie recommended having teeth capped, the said. “I den’t have to wear it anymore, but I knew being self conscious about your teeth can affect your personality.

“I went to school with a girl who would not smile because of a gap between’ her two front teeth. With the first money she was able to save she had caps made to correct this, and it was amazing how much more attractive she was with a smile on her face.

Elizabeth Hartman

This is a 1965 Lydia Lane articles. Enjoy!

Elizabeth Hartman feels like a Cinderella. Her first Hollywood screen test won her an important role in MGM’s “A Patch of Blue.” Young and serious, she does not consider herself a candidate for being a glamour queen, but she is aware of the part appearance plays. “I think every girl in her teens or one emerging from them is constantly searching for self-discovery. You must have an internal and an external goal. To achieve them you must have discipline and patience.” Elizabeth feels external goals are easier to attain.

One of her most immediate is to deal with the problem of over-curly hair. “You hase the choice of using an electric comb or a preparation that is the opposite of a permanent wave which beauty salons or supply houses carry. “Some girls try every new glamour trick. I feel I am at my best by being natural.

But, if you don’t want to wear makeup, then you have an obligation to keep your skin as nearly perfect as possible.” Elizabeth has two favorite routines that she learned from her mother. One is a lotion to use after cleansing your face. To be sure every trace of make-up is removed, use a solution that is made with witch hazel and boric acid. Mix a dram of boric acid powder and 8 ounces of witch hazel. Shake well each time before using it.

“When my face seems dry, like to use a mask. It is made of powdered skim milk, one part castor oil (the odorless kind) and two parts baby oil. Biend this until it is pasty. Be sure your face is clean before you apply it. and if possible lie down for 15 minutes while it dries.

Rinse it off with warm waier, then lots of cold water.”

Simone Signoret – Take two

This is a 1965 Lydia Lane article. Enjoy!

The impact of Simone Signoret’s personality is just as forceful off the screen as it is on. After the premiere of “Ship of Fools,” everyone in Hollywood was raving about her performance. The love story of a younger man and an older woman in which she is involved in the film is completely believable. It is interesting that it came off SO well because Simone has placed little value on staying young. Ephemeral beauty, which vanishes when the bloom of youth fades, doesn’t interest her.

“I would never have things done to my face. As we change inside, it has to follow that the lines which come with living and suffering contribute to our individuality. To take them away with a face lift is to leave you with a mask. “True beauty is dependent on your life, on what you a loved and learned and laughed about and worked for. These things show in your face and project in your personality.” As we chatted in her bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel, I was struck by her clear and radiant skin, which requires no make-up.

Once again she relies on beauty from within. “I sleep well and have never had to take pills. Proper rest is necessary for good skin. I prefer simple cooking to rich sauces,” she said, stressing the importance of the proper diet. Miss Signoret lives in the country in the south of France.

For exercise she swims and takes walks. “Walking is the most healthful exercise for me. I breathe deeply as I walk and fill my lungs with the fresh clean air. When you take in enough oxygen and rid the body of its impurities, you sleep more soundly at night. “Also, when you respect others and retain your own self-respect, falling asleep at night is no problem.” We talked of her individuality.

“Perhaps I carry my independence too far, but I am not a rebel. I simply try to avoid what I consider boring religiously going to the hair dresser or following fashion.” And she confesses no interest in reducing diets. “Sometimes I cut down on my eating portions. I should weigh less,” she admitted with a smile, “but probably never will.”

Tisha Sterling

“The mental side of dieting is a must,” Tisha Sterling told me. “When I was unhappy at one time in my life, I earned 20 type of problem-cat-inc follow a pattern: I ate when I was not really hungry, and sometimes would stuff my self with food that I didn’t particularly like. When I look back, it was because I had a negative attitude. I really didn’t care what I looked like. “My friends began remarking About how fat I was. I had to let out my clothes, but I didn’t try to reduce because I knew if I lost weight I wouldn’t keep it off. I had known one too many problem-eaters struggling to get rid of extra pounds and then turning to extreme diets where they can drop them in one day/week/month but just as easily get them back.

“Once my personal life was undisturbed. I began to reduce. I dropped weight in two months that I had accumulated in two years. I don’t like having to count calories. The diet that worked for her was high in protein with salads and fruits. “I eliminated starches and and cut my portions in half, and the weight I took off stayed off Vie were chatting on CRS-TV’s People set when a snack cart came by. “I try never to eat between meals, but in mid afternoon if I’m hungry I take a glass of skim milk or vegetable juice Tish weighs once a week If she finds she’s added a couple of pounds, she goes on her diet. The diet is:

Breakfast; 2 hard-boiled eggs. 8-ounce glass of tomato juice. Lunch: A large raw-vegetable salad, glass of skim milk. Suggestions for salad: carrot strips, green onions, tomatoes, cauliflower bud, green peppers and cucumbers. Season all with salt, pepper and lemon juice. Mid-afternoon’ I unpeeled an apple, glass of skim milk or vegetable juice. Dinner; Bilked or broiled chicken, steamed broccoli with a sprinkling of lemon juice. Desert: 1 slice of melon or berries.

Barbara Harris

This is a 1965 Lydia Lane article. Enjoy!

“Being attractive takes “many forms,” Barbara Harris declared. “When I was in high school I thought it could be wrapped up in one word-glamour. Glamour is not for everyone. “I can remember putting on my sister’s makeup and feeling that being physically beautiful was the most essential thing I wanted out of life. Now I will settle for being clean and individual. I “When I was first starting out in the theater, Hollywood offered me a contract, but I refused he-pause I felt I was unprepared,” she said.

“There is an art to living, and to practice it we have to learn many things. We have to discover where we are going, who we are, what forces have shaped our lives and lie behind them.” We were chatting on the set at Paramount where Barbara is playing the role She created in the off-Broadway production of “Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You In the Closet and I’m Feeling So Sad.” For some time young Barbara has made a great impression in the theater And stardom is predicted for her.

“The more I see of life, the more I realize the destructive force of tension. I suppose you could say learning to relax is my most prized beauty secret. Studying Zen has been of great help. It gave me a sense of perspective and values,” she said. “When I am tense, I get great relief soaking in a tub of hot water, I lie there with my mind on other things than my problem. I try to contemplate the universe in its entirely until I have regained my sense of perspective and can see the relative insignificance of what I had been worrying about.”
